My Classroom Expectations on Technology
First, technology is a tool. This means that it can be used for its intended purposes, and for unintended purposes. I understand some of the benefits, and I am concerned about its consequences. Technology is a part of my life, and it is surely a part of your students' life. It is with this understand that I know I cannot avoid it. Students will only be permitted to use their school laptops, or in individual circumstances a personal device, with this being on a case-by-case basis. I intend on using a minimal amount of technology. If I can print reading materials for class, I fully intend on doing so. I believe this forces students to focus on reading what is in front of them and are hopefully less distracted by the choices that are in front of them by being on a laptop. Students will be permitted to use their laptops to take notes, but a pencil and notepad are preferred but not mandated. I do not wish to burden any student or parent by requiring something that is not necessary in order to learn for this class. That said, study after study concludes that students remember more by taking physical notes, than digital ones, hence my preference. Students will also be shown materials online like YouTube videos that are related to the course from historians who are experts within their field, and are yes, sometimes more charismatic than I. I mentioned earlier that technology is a tool, and I know it can be used as unintended, I was that student who would on occasion play Cool Math games, or other silly games to pass the time or simply distract myself from learning. I know some students are like this, but I know I was not the only one, it is because of this that I want to minimize students' exposure to being online. Students are allowed to conduct research on their laptops and use citation generation machines like Easy Bib & Purdue Owl, as citing your sources is important in history. Students will also be utilizing their laptops to create posters and presentations on Canva & Power Point. These are great tools that produce learning, and to show what your child has learned while in school. Students are prohibited from using any AI. I firmly believe that it makes students reliant upon it, not only this study after study concludes that its use produces less learning in the brain. My job as a teacher to not only teach history, but to help your student learn! Grammer mistakes are bound to happen and will minimally affect the outcome of your students' grades. That said, students are permitted to use word counter, and Grammarly if they so choose to scan for spelling errors on their essays and other presentations. I believe that these restrictions allow for your student to have the best of technology, and the best opportunity for them to develop skills that will stay with them well into their adulthood.
